It made its debut on July 18, 2012, marking it as the fifth Iranian TV channel to embrace digital broadcasting and the second to offer content in High Definition quality. Viewers can access this channel through Set-top box devices and online platforms.

IRIB Varzesh primarily focuses on broadcasting various sports competitions, both domestic and international, bringing the excitement of athletic events to its audience. The channel transitioned to HD format and HEVC codec transmission via terrestrial and satellite receivers on November 29, 2020.
